with the MCS 5100 - aka MIMI

In 2001, as a direct result of the College re-organization initiative, all of the technology departments were re-organized into the IITS (Information and Instructional Technology Services) Division. The organization uses a horizontal management design and consists of three functional areas that reflect our priorities: Instructional Support, User Services, and Systems Support. IITS is responsible for: instructional services and support, distance learning, video conferencing, our web site, multi-media services, end-user support, Helpdesk, administrative systems, networking resources, and infrastructure.

IITS is team oriented. Project teams consisting of volunteers from IITS and others from around campus establish many of the new initiatives and maintain vigilant watch over existing procedures.

In the Fall of 2005, King's College started implementing the most ambitious project ever. This project would be the first to clearly be motivated by the goal to be innovative and create a competitive advantage over our peers. The implementation of the Nortel MCS 5100, the upgrade of our phone system to VoIP, and the change to Call Pilot (an IP-based voice mail system) provides King's with a cutting edge Multimedia Collaboration Service.

The MCS 5100 (christened Mimi by our IITS Marketing Project Team) offers many collaboration features fully integrated into a unified messaging and traditional and IP-based phone system. King's College is one of a few institutions in the country to implement this complete collaborative system. It is the goal of IITS to make the use of Mimi as prevalent as the Internet itself. A whole new collaborative world awaits the students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, and community neighbors of King's College.

The primary mission of IITS has been to establish technologies that help support the mission of the College. Top priorities have been to develop reliable and available resources. With organization, processes, and procedures now well in place, it was now time to set new goals for IITS. IITS expects to make technology and the instructional and administrative changes technology can bring a competitive advantage for King's.

Future initiatives include expanding the wireless availability on campus and joining Internet2. But the most exciting addition to the IITS team will be the start of our new Student Staffed Support Team. We expect to fully take advantage of the greatest resource at King's, the students themselves.
